NABIA Project - Advancing Bioremediation and Circular Economy

Innovative Solutions for Environmental Pollutants

The NABIA project (PTDC/BTA-GES/2740/2020), funded by FCT and ongoing until 2024, is a significant development hub at the University of Coimbra in the fields of bioremediation and circular economy. This project aims to tackle environmental pollutants through biological processes utilizing microalgae, specifically Nannochloropsis sp., known for its high lipid content and efficacy in wastewater treatment. The NABIA project not only focuses on cleaning polluted waters but also on adding value to the biomass produced during bioremediation.

High-Value Product Development

Innovative and high-value products such as biosurfactants, bioemulsifiers, coatings, resins, and lubricants are being developed from the biomass used in the bioremediation process. The project’s groundbreaking approach leverages the unique properties of Nannochloropsis sp. to create sustainable solutions for environmental challenges.

Patent and Confidential Results

With numerous results protected and a PPA in preparation for polymers derived from monomers obtained from the recovered biomass, the NABIA project represents a cutting-edge initiative in the realm of sustainable environmental management. Confidential results can be provided to interested parties upon request.

The NABIA project exemplifies the University of Coimbra's commitment to innovation in bioremediation and the circular economy, showcasing the transformative potential of interdisciplinary research in tackling global environmental issues.
